A THOUSAND LITTLE DISCOVERIES

An original, one-of-one work created to capture what I see when I sit along the shoreline and comb through Florida’s shell beds.

This piece took more than 15 hours of gluing alone to complete—and I genuinely couldn’t tell you how many trips to the beach it took to find and collect all of the shells that went into it. Each shell and fragment was personally found by me and individually placed by hand.

Throughout the work, you’ll find several different motifs and smaller compositions hidden within the larger piece. My vision was to translate the experience of searching through a shell bed onto canvas: the way your eye moves from one tiny discovery to another, noticing unexpected colors, shapes, textures, fossils, and fragments among hundreds of shells.

Mixed throughout the piece are fragments of fossilized shark teeth as well as fossilized stingray vertebrae, adding pieces of Florida’s ancient natural history among the shells of its present-day shoreline.

There is no designated top or bottom. A Thousand Little Discoveries was composed so that it can be hung in any orientation, allowing its owner to decide how they experience the work.

The finished piece weighs just over 12 pounds, so appropriate wall hardware and secure installation are recommended.
